Sellers have been targeted by an email scam claiming to be from police regarding false PayPal payments and legal action.

An email scam is being circulated claiming a complaint has been made against the seller to the “Australian Police” about PayPal payments that have not been received. These emails typically claim to be from the “Australian Police” and feature images from state police websites.

The email usually implies legal action will be taken against the seller if their personal details or details of the transaction aren’t provided to the “Australian Police” via an overseas immediately.

This is a phishing scam attempting to obtain sellers personal information or banking details.

Email scams like these can include:

  1. Australian Police branding or State Police branding.
  2. Broken English, including grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
  3. Threats of legal action unless personal details or transaction details are provided.
  4. Unusual contact details, including addresses from free email service providers.
