False Western Union Payment Scam

Be wary of sellers requesting payment be made though money transfer services like Western Union, as money transferred by these means cannot be traced or refunded.

Buyers have been targeted in a scam involving Western Union transactions for fake vehicle listings.

A false email notification is being circulated to buyers confirming their intent to purchase an advertised item. The email includes specific details for how buyers can complete payment for the item. Fraudsters will often request that all payments are to be made through Western Union Auction Payments and made payable to an international address.

Email scams like these include:

  1. Carsales.com.au logos and branding.
  2. Details of the false vehicle listings enquired on.
  3. Broken English including grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
  4. Warnings against providing details of the transaction to anyone other than via the links to customer service provided in the email.
