'Tip of the Day' Email Scam

Important Note: be wary of emails claiming to be from the carsales network insisting you check your junk mail box for emails which appear to be from carsales.com.au. If you are unsure about an email you have received contact us directly to confirm the details in the email.

An email scam is being circulated to buyers who have enquired on a listing which has been suspended or removed on the suspicion that it may be a false or scam advertisement.

Buyers are sent a 'Tip Of The Day' email claiming to be from the carsales network. The fraudulent email advises customers who have enquired on a suspended or removed ad that any emails sent to their junk mail box from the seller can now be marked as 'safe'.

Fraudsters have then sent additional emails advising that the suspended or removed vehicle listing has been ‘verified’ and republished to the carsales website. Links provided in this email are directed to false version (a ghost website) of carsales.com.au and are used to obtain buyers contact details.

Email scams like these can include:

  1. Carsales.com.au logos and branding.
  2. Unusual contact details, including addresses from free email service providers
  3. Specific instructions on how to restore emails from junk mail folders.
